Island Shipping attains MLC Certification

Island Shipping has recently been deemed compliant with the MLC 2006 and relevant vessels in the company's fleet have been certified accordingly by the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors (SCMS).

All at Island Shipping are delighted that the company has adopted the MLC 2006 because it enshrines best practise with regard to seafarer employment terms and welfare.  The MLC 2006 has been adopted by the UK and Irish administrations and in the UK, the MCA has made it mandatory for coded workboats to be MLC compliant.  In summary the MLC 2006 deals with the following key aspects of Seafarer Welfare:

  1. Minimum requirements for seafarers to work on a ship
  2. Conditions of employment
  3. Accommodation, recreational facilities, food and catering
  4. Health protection, medical care, welfare and social security protection
  5. Compliance and enforcement
